Lazy Parents: A Threat to Children

By Michael Gilbert

A second great threat to the youth in the Lord’s church is Christian parents who refuse to teach their children at home. The home provides a perfect place to educate our children in the gospel, God’s power to save mankind from sin (Rom. 1:16). However, have you ever known parents in the Lord’s church with this philosophy, “I am not going to take my children to church. To do so would force my beliefs on them. They need to be able to make their own decisions about religion. This way, the faith in God that they develop will be their own”? How sophisticated and refreshing that decision is – parents who allow their children to be ‘open-minded’, and not biased by their parents’ religious views! What an educated, civilized decision on the part of the parents! That is, until the truth is placed alongside that soul-damning philosophy. “What truth?”, you ask? The truth that your children will either be educated by Satan and his henchmen, or by you. There is no ‘neutral time’ in a young person’s life where they can ‘step outside of the world’, take an unbiased look, make up their mind on religious matters, then ‘step back into this world’ having made the right decision. If you are not educating (biasing) your children in the ways of God, then Satan is having a field day with your children! Parents, if at any point you are not instructing your children in the ways of the Lord, Satan becomes the teacher. He sits outside your home, listening. Listening for the very second when you cease teaching about godliness, righteousness, verity, heaven, and hell. When you cease, Satan ‘steps into the classroom’ and begins teaching about cursing, immodest dress, immoral sexual behavior, smoking, drugs, the ‘evils’ of being a good person, the ‘benefits’ of associating with the ‘popular’ crowd, selfishness, and the general pleasures of sin. And Satan never takes the vain philosophy, “I will leave this young boy/girl alone. They need to make their own decisions about religion. I will not force my beliefs on them”. He is smarter than that. Parents, in a world of ungodliness you must continue to/begin teaching your children the ways of God. Moses never wrote, “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt send your children to Priest School to learn them…”(Deut. 6:6-9). Paul never wrote, “Fathers, provoke not your children unto wrath, but bring them to bible school to learn about My Son…”(Eph. 6:4). Parents, you must take the lead in the spiritual education of your children. Teach your children of God when you sit at home, when you engage in activities with them, when you put them to bed, when you awaken them in the morning. Use bible classes and worship as an aid, not as the main religious instruction in their life. Take the lead. If you don’t, Satan will.
