God Give Us Christian Homes

America needs godly homes. Oh that the timely song “God Give Us Christian Homes” would be echoed throughout our brotherhood, nay nationwide!

Oh for Christian homes where the Bible is taught and read, for the home is truly “the foundation of our society”.

In Gibbon’s Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, he cites the rapid increase of the divorce rate coupled with the undermining of the sanctity of the home as one reason for Rome’s great fall. How I wish that America would learn that lesson.

The godly American home as we once knew it getting scarce. Some states now list “two moms” on the birth certificate of newborns. Same-sex marriage is already accepted as the norm in many parts of our nation. Teenagers have no guilt after indulging in the lust of the flesh. And when babies are produced because of unbridled teenage lust, grandparents (often without complaint, which is sad) are left to raise the babies because “kids will be kids”.

Babies are no longer “a heritage of the Lord”, but a burden to be borne. This is because more and more young women are putting their own careers before their families.

How can we strengthen our own homes so the kingdom of Christ can prosper in our wicked society? First, we must recognize that our homes are under attack, and then we must invite Christ into our homes.

Our Homes Are Under Attack

Satan often “fires both barrels” at Christian homes via the television. Pornography is commonplace in America’s homes (and I am not talking about so-called “adult movies”). Primetime TV reveals more flesh, condones more adultery, and promotes more fornication than ever before…and our kids are watching. In fact, America’s youth often know more about the marriage act than most married couples.

Aside from the immorality, the sheer waste of time watching TV does much to pull families apart. Especially since the TV can be conveniently placed in each room of the house. Because of this, a family of four can live under the same room and spend little precious time together. Please don’t misunderstand…I am not against TV per se, but I am against the many abuses of it.

Satan also uses lack of discipline to his advantage. When Eli’s sons made themselves vile, he did not restrain them (1 Sam. 3:13). However, wisdom teaches Christian parents to “chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying” (Prov. 19:18).

Unlawful divorce has taken its toll on children. Lack of nurture and admonition has its consequences as well. Also, the stunning lack of true familial love in the home has caused must needless suffering.

Christ In Our Homes

Peter, Jairus, Mary, Martha, and Zacchaeus were all privileged to have Jesus come into their homes. Each visit offered a special blessing to that home.

To Peter’s home, Jesus brought health (Mk. 1:29-31). To Jairus’ home, life (Mk. 5:22-41). Mary and Martha needed to hear the words of eternal life (Lk. 10:28-42). Jesus brought salvation to Zacchaeus’ home (Lk. 19:1-10).

Brethren, Jesus can offer your family a special blessing, but only if He is welcome in your home. Does your family make the time to spend quality time with Jesus?
