12 Rules for Successful Living

by James F. Palmer

Bookstore and library shelves are full of “how to ” books. Americans clamor for the latest, greatest secrets to success. Whether we want to know how to succeed in business or our personal life, God’s Holy Word is the only guide any of us needs. In fact, all we need to know about “life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3) can be found in Holy Scripture.

So what’s the secret that seems so elusive to many? As it turns out, the “secret to success” is really no secret at all. The God who created us knows what we need to succeed and He does not keep it a secret. In His revealed Word, we can know many things, but for space’s sake, we will list “12 Rules for Successful Living.”

Rule 1. Pray for one another.

“… Pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16)

Rule 2. Exhort and encourage one another.

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:13)

Rule 3. Edify and comfort one another.

“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9-11)

Rule 4. Confess when we wrong one another.

“Confess your faults one to another, …” (James 5:16)

Rule 5. Love one another, even when it is not convenient.

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34)

Rule 6. Prefer one another.

“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” (Romans 12:10)

Rule 7. Serve one another.

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13)

Rule 8. Bear with one another.

“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” (Colossians. 3:12-13)

Rule 9. Submit to one another.

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” (Ephesians 5:20-21)

Rule 10. Spur on one another.

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:” (Hebrews 10:24)

Rule 11. Be hospitable to one another.

“And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging.” (1 Peter 4:8-9)

Rule 12. Greet one another.

“Salute one another with an holy kiss…” (Romans 16:16)

The greatest success in the world cannot be measured in dollars and cents, but in the character one possesses. God’s way is the only way to realize the true success that He has prepared for His children.
